Explanation of Charges

Tuition for Tufts undergraduates is a comprehensive fee that covers basic charges for instruction, costs of registration, most laboratory supplies, and other incidental items or services.

All first-year and sophomore students, except those who live at home and commute to Tufts, are required to live in university housing or recognized fraternities or sororities.   Each semester you will be billed for your room as well as the housing commitment fee. The fee is $750 for all rooms per semester. The housing commitment fee portion of the campus housing charge is not refundable for any student-initiated cancellation, leave of absence, study elsewhere (study at another university within the U.S.), transfer, or withdrawal. Exceptions will only be made when a student, subsequent to selecting a room is admitted to a study abroad program. Please see the Tufts Bulletin for further details regarding the housing commitment fee.

First-year students are required to enroll in the premium meal plan and second-year students may choose from several meal plans. Juniors, seniors, and students who live in exempt housing or commute are not required to be on a meal plan, although many choose to select one from any of the six meal plan options. Most Tufts undergraduates also use a JumboCash account which enables them to make purchases in all dining locations as well as other locations on and off campus.

Mandatory Health and Wellness Fee and Medical Insurance Charges

All students are required to pay the mandatory Health and Wellness fee that appears on the bill each fall. This fee covers the use of the Health Services Center on campus. The full fee is required even if you are attending for one semester. In addition, Massachusetts law requires that all students have health insurance. Students are automatically charged for the Tufts student health insurance plan, but may choose to waive the insurance if already covered under another comparable insurance plan. This waiver can be completed in your Student Information System (SIS) account and may be completed every year beginning June 1st through the due date of your bill.  Questions about Tufts Health Insurance should be directed to Health and Wellness.

Student Activity Fee

All students are required to pay the student activity fee. This fee is proposed by the Tufts Community Union Student Senate each year. This fee supports the co-curricular experience for all undergraduate students by funding the operations and activities of over 300 recognized student organizations annually.

Admission Deposit

Accepted students must pay an admission deposit, which is applied to tuition for the first year.

Estimate Your Bill

You can estimate what you will owe Tufts using the Student Account Calculator.

Our calculator consists of two pages.

  • First, enter personal information such as class level and room choices then click the “Calculate Charges and Balance” button at the bottom of the page to view a second page with costs and available aid or resources.
  • The amount that remains due to Tufts (or a credit) will be listed at the bottom of the second page.

When using the calculator, here are several points to keep in mind:

  • The figures used in the calculator are 2023-2024 figures.
  • The calculator assumes all entering first year students are enrolled full-time, have the premium board plan (per University policy) and have paid an Admission deposit.
  • The Health and Wellness and Student Activity fees are mandatory and billed once each year, during the fall semester.
  • You may wish to print out the second page of the calculator for reference. Once you leave the calculator site, the information you added will not be permanently saved.
