Facilitating access and providing academic support for Tufts students

The StAAR Center offers academic support through one-on-one academic success coaching, writing consultations, and tutoring, along with group programs and workshops. The StAAR Center also supports students with documented disabilities to ensure access to their Tufts experiences. Our programs promote engaged, collaborative learning that builds on students’ strengths while addressing their concerns and questions.

Academic Success Coaching

We work with graduate and undergraduate students to develop academic skills, habits, and mindsets for success at any point in their Tufts experience. We meet one-on-one with students to develop and improve executive functioning skills, set and work towards goals, and navigate academic life.

STAAR Coaching

Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutors support students taking introductory and intermediate courses in the natural sciences, mathematics, economics, and foreign languages. Our tutors are trained peer leaders who assist their fellow undergraduates in becoming independent learners.

Writing and Communication Support

We work with undergraduate and graduate student writers at any stage of the writing process and for any academic writing project. We strive to provide a supportive environment for you to discuss your ideas, develop your voice as a writer, and engage in a robust process of drafting and revision. We also offer practice with presentations, English conversation, and other communication strategies.

Accessibility and Accommodations

We work with students with documented disabilities to implement accommodations for academics, housing, transportation, and dining. Through an interactive process, our Accessibility Specialists work individually with students to develop solutions that address their access concerns and honor their unique experiences with their disability.

Mission

The Student Accessibility and Academic Resources (StAAR) Center offers academic support to all students in Arts and Sciences, SMFA, Engineering, and Fletcher, along with specific support that facilitates equitable access for students with disabilities. We foster students’ educational growth and promote process-oriented, collaborative learning experiences. As a team composed of professional staff alongside graduate and undergraduate student staff, we ground our approach in inclusive, culturally-informed pedagogies. By engaging students, faculty, staff, and campus partners, we envision a universally accessible learning environment where students possess the self-efficacy to achieve their academic goals in the classroom and beyond.
